Tony Robbins – Motivation in a Slump

by admin

Tony Robbins is possibly one of the most famous motivational speakers alive today. I know a lot of people love him & a lot of people hate him. Here’s a video from him & what I think:

My Comments On the Video:

Tony talks about training ourselves emotionally to deal with situations. Rather than sitting around letting things happen to us, we need to prepare ourselves for events so that we are ready when adversity strikes.

He also mentions how when disasters occur our true selves come out. Angry people get angry, fearful people become more afraid, etc. We may not want to admit it, and we may make excuses about how we reacted in a situation to try to explain our behavior, but that is really when our true selves come out.

The last thing he says is that there is always someone doing worse than you & dealing with it. It doesn’t matter if you are in a bad situation, there are people in worse situations and if you are creative, innovative & hardworking you’ll get through it.

How Does it Apply to You:

The first thing we need to do is go and prepare ourselves for situations. Condition yourself to be “emotionally fit” as Tony says so that whenever a bad situation comes up you are ready for it and & you can deal with it.

When we make excuses about our behaviors during disasters, we aren’t fooling anyone but ourselves. It’s usually because we don’t want to believe that we really are like that, but we need to recognize that that is who we are. If you don’t like it, then you need to do something about it! Don’t hide from it – bring it out in the open and deal with it head on.

We should set an example for others. When other people are getting scared or reacting poorly to situations, we need to step up and model a good response & set a good example for others – especially children.

Closing Thoughts:

The main point of this video is prepare yourself emotionally. When Y2K was about to happen people prepared themselves for the whole world to fall apart. They stocked up their houses and prepared to deal with a lack of technology (though if you asked any programmer you wouldn’t have wasted your time because there was no real issue).

The way people prepared physically for Y2K is the way you need to prepare yourself emotionally for the situations that will inevitably occur throughout your life.

P.S. For a full step by step process for motivating yourself including:

1. A “big picture” overview of motivation

2. Gaining an understanding what truly motivates people (not just what the so-called “gurus” say)

3. Extrinsic & intrinsic motivators – when they are useful and how to use them (and proof to back it up)

4. Automatic motivation – how to automatically motivate yourself even if you hate what you need to do.
